Now here at MeetTheGeeks we get a barrage of gadgets on a regular basis. Some are sent for information purposes, some for feedback and some for review. Now occasionally something stands out, sometimes things just get returned as being pointless. Now today we look at something that really has ‘buy me’ written all over it. It’s a great gadget, it’s useful and it’s not in the UK, just yet.

Now, data protections, say that to most systems admins and watch them recoil into the shadows like a vampyre with a bottle of holy water and a daylight simulation light bulb. But, in the UK its laws bind all companies. We are also starting to find recycling being such an important part of things. We, the same as so many countries, waste so much that can be recycled. This new gadget promises to close the gap between both those rulings and bring peace of mind.

But what is it I hear you ask?

Well let’s get on with it then…

Disc Eraser is a simple tool to make disks unreadable so you can simply recycle them, or throw them away for processing later. That’s it, its not difficult, its not complicated; it’s a very simple tool. All it does it safely, and I emphasis this, ‘safely’ make the disc 100% unreadable.

Now then, I have, admittedly, shattered discs with important data on I no longer need, old music discs, even used a knife or a screwdriver to scratch the back of the disks. On occasion drilled them through for fun. I know its dangerous, but the worst part is shattering discs makes one hell of a mess! This also means that shattered discs can’t be recycled, so it only ends up as landfill. Simple really isn’t it? Make them unreadable then recycle, and it saves losing your eye sight shattering them, as well as cleaning up afterwards, so lets try the simpler option.

Now, the unit is supplied in a bubble pack card, which is easy to open, not like those blister packs that take a chain saw and the laser from James Bond to get into them! When it’s out of the pack, to use it is so simple. Lift the cutter up on the hinge and place a disc into it, data side up. So if you see any print, you got it the wrong way up. When that’s done, make sure the slider is at one side of the unit, and close the lid down onto it. Place the item on a desk or table, somewhere flat, and simpley slide the cutter across to the other side.

That’s it, slide it across once, if your really worried, rotate the disc and repeat the procedure. We were sent a disc that had been done already with the system by the company, we could not read it, so if the companies bank details were on that I can only say they are still safe. I put various doc files, music and pics on a disc and treated it to the ‘eraser’ treatment. That cannot be read any more I tried, the PC simply says ‘No Disc’ and does nothing with it. I then set about trying to recover something from the disc, so hit it with Nero, trying to get something from it, but after 45 minutes gave up. I rapidly hit the Internet to find recovery tools for CD’s and DVD’s, there was some out there and I tried them all. I could get two small apps to read parts of the disc, but nothing was readable as data, only as glyphs, which meant nothing to anyone.

In my humble opinion, this does exactly what it said on the tin. It brutally kicks the ass of a disc and leaves it as an ornament. The idea is simple, the tool is simpler than that, but the effect leaves you secure in the knowledge, it’s done its job!

I can’t fault the unit in any way at all, the simplest methods are really the best, and so the three cutting blades that score so effectively are perfect. You cannot read anything from a disk that’s been treated to the eraser treatment. 100%, it’s nuked. I do wonder how long the blades will last if you treat every disk to a sweep, rotate and sweep again treatment, but even if its 12 months or a few hundred discs, the price is so cheap it doesn’t matter. This certainly gets my vote, and an award for solving such a problem, and achieving it so simply. I can’t recommend these enough for any office or home that wants personal files, kept personal. UK stockists, take note, these are going to be BIG so get them in early, it’s an amazing product deserving our award for excellence.
